PS5 Linux
PS5 Linux is an open-source project that boots desktop Linux on a PlayStation 5 console, transforming it into a full x86 gaming PC. Security researcher Andy Nguyen (@theflow0) exploits a patched hypervisor vulnerability to bypass Sony's locked OS and hand control to Ubuntu.
Nguyen posted the first proof on March 6, 2026 — a video of GTA V Enhanced running at 1440p/60fps with ray tracing. The public toolchain (ps5-linux-loader v1.0) shipped April 28, 2026, supporting PS5 Phat consoles on firmware 3.xx or 4.xx with an Ubuntu 24.04 image builder.
Once booted via ps5-linux-loader, a disc-based PS5 on firmware 4.02 runs as an eight-core Zen 2 Linux desktop. Nguyen demonstrated Steam launching GTA V Enhanced with ray tracing at 1440p/60fps — using the PS5's RDNA 2 GPU at 2.23 GHz. The exploit must be re-run after each reboot; persistent boot support is planned.
Think of it as a software skeleton key that unlocks a $500 gaming PC hiding inside your PS5.

Why is it emerging now?
Andy Nguyen's April 28 public release of ps5-linux-loader turned a March demo video into a reproducible process: any PS5 Phat owner on firmware 3.xx–4.xx can now boot Ubuntu 24.04, run Steam, and play AAA titles with ray tracing — for the first time without needing to compile or hack anything themselves.
Outlook
6-month signal projection and commercial timeline.
Strong homebrew momentum, but limited to ~2% of PS5 hardware; Sony firmware updates will progressively shrink the compatible pool.
Risk · Sony could push mandatory firmware updates that block access to supported 3.xx–4.xx consoles entirely.

Every PS5 Phat on firmware 3.xx or 4.xx is now a dual-boot Linux gaming PC — no soldering, no permanent modification, no warranty void beyond the obvious.
Not a gaming PC. Not a Steam Deck. A PS5, firmware 4.02, booted into Ubuntu, running Steam. GTA VI at 1440p with ray tracing.
